Workshop 03- Planning

Hi everyone,

Thanks again for taking charge of your different sections in this week's session, it was both productive and enjoyable for the pupils. Will give you a bit of feedback about specific aspects next week.

For the coming week, I think it’s important that we all go and look at the space where the work will be displayed, so I think we should begin the morning with this.

Then have the same kind of exercise as this week, with the "Consequences" drawing, but instead use text. So whoever would like to lead this can take the opportunity!!!

After I think it would be good to refer back to the mask image of the previous week and recap the identity and narrative of these, so that all pupils are clear about the source for developing their image. Anyone who wants to change will need to be supported with establishing who their image will portray.

I would really like to see a development in the use of text, so it would be good to have as many creative ways as possible to use text as a design or visual tool. With all your different ways of exploring processes, would for instance, James, John and Julia who all work with text, like to introduce their very different ideas in the use of text? And anyone else who wants to contribute?

Maybe also to expand the use the photographic images, as repeat design motifs, etc, so if anyone wants to work on this and lead an exploration, that would be great.Let me know if you have any ideas, or would like any materials to be provided.

  1. Text Activity
    Workshop 03:

    03/03/2009

    Overview:
I have been thinking about an activity that would look at text as Irene has mentioned above- hopefully it might lead into looking at text as a visual design tool in a follow-up activity.

    Part One:
I thought that we could all collect a number of images- from newspapers and magazines- prior to the workshop. Working alongside an Undergraduate, the pupils would aim to come up with a new title for the image they select, offering an alternative narrative and reading of the image.

The pupils could use a titling style that emulates a newspaper/journalist headline to help with this activity- we could offer newspaper examples on the day.

    N.B
Images should have the titles and captions blacked out or removed.
We should try to choose images of people that students wouldn’t initially recognise- this might work a lot better. Celebrities like David Beckham for example might restrict a creative response to this activity as the pupils would be able to identify with his profession, lifestyle and family.

    Part Two:
Whilst working on the title- the pupils will be asked to develop the narrative initiated through the title by adding up to 5 bullet points of descriptive text (see attachment for sheet design) to their sheet.

    Part Three:
The conclusion of this activity could develop in two ways:

1.Students could present their title and description to the rest of the group.
2.Students could cut their pieces of paper along the dotted (see attachment for sheet design). We could then pin up all the images on the back wall leaving the text in a pile on the desk. Each student would then be asked to pick one of the titles/descriptions and attempt to appropriately associate it to one of the images on the wall- not necessarily the image it was originally written for.

    Equipment Needed:
    Pens (Various)
    Scissors
    Pins or Tape

    Time:
    15-30 minutes
